Session Forge

Overview

Session Forge is an offline game master toolkit for fantasy tabletop RPGs, made by Donald Stelling of Digital Underground. Instead of another long PDF, it is a single HTML hub that the GM opens in a web browser and uses at the table to prepare and run sessions. It holds 14 tools: encounters, NPCs, loot, initiative, session notes, dungeons, taverns, quests, rumors, villains, weather and travel, settlements, a one-click one-shot outline, and a short GM playbook.

Tools for running the table

  • Encounter Forge builds fights on an XP budget set by party level, party size and difficulty (Easy to Deadly). Each encounter comes with a motive and a twist, and the creatures are drawn from 198 original 5e-style stat lines.
  • Initiative Tracker handles HP, AC, conditions, group adds and d20 rolls. Rounds and turn order save automatically, so combat survives closing the browser. Fights made in Encounter Forge can be sent straight into the tracker.
  • Session Notes saves as the GM types, offers random sparks for quick ideas, and keeps a full archive that can be restored.
  • GM Playbook explains how to use the tools live without slowing the game down.

Generators

  • Full Session: a one-click one-shot outline with a hook, NPCs, a villain, a journey, two fights, a site, treasure and a twist.
  • NPC Generator: 8 naming cultures, plus role, voice, quirk, secret and adventure hook, and a "crowd of six" mode.
  • Loot Tables: common to very rare items, plus gems, art objects and 64 curses.
  • Taverns & Shops: taverns and shops with priced wares.
  • Dungeon Builder: dungeons of 3 to 12 rooms, with a boss scaled to the party.
  • Quest Hooks, Villain Forge and Settlements.
  • Rumor Mill: rumors with a GM-only truth rating.
  • Weather & Travel: 6 climates and 4 seasons.
On every generator, the GM can lock a line and reroll the rest, go back through a saved history of the last 20 rolls, copy results as text or Markdown, download them as .md or .txt, and send them to Session Notes in one click. Seeds are repeatable, so the same seed always gives the same result.

How it works

The GM downloads a ZIP, opens index.html and bookmarks it for game night. After that one download, Session Forge runs fully offline with no account. Data is saved in the browser, and the home page has backup and restore. It works in a browser on desktop and on mobile.

Systems and fit

The stats are
5e https://groupfinder.gg/library/dungeons-dragons-5e-2014
-flavored so they feel familiar, and the content is easy to reskin for
OSR https://groupfinder.gg/library/old-school-renaissance-osr-2000
games,
Pathfinder https://groupfinder.gg/library/pathfinder-2nd-edition-2019
or homebrew settings. All generator content is original; it is not a dump of official rulebook text. Session Forge suits GMs running 5e-compatible fantasy, one-shots and west-marches campaigns, and GMs who improvise and need ideas fast. It is not a virtual tabletop plugin: it runs locally in the browser and does not connect to
Foundry VTT https://groupfinder.gg/library/foundry-virtual-tabletop-foundry-vtt
or
Roll20 https://groupfinder.gg/library/roll20
.

Price and license

Session Forge is a one-time purchase from CAD$14.99 (pay what you want above that) on Gumroad. The license is personal, single-GM use. Version 2 raised the toolkit from 6 tools to 14, and earlier buyers get v2 free by downloading again; their v1 saves carry over.

Whether you’re a Starfinder veteran or just love a good sci-fi story, you’ll find thrilling adventures, memorable characters, and original TTRPG storytelling right here. The Story Four years post gap, Absalom Station is failing. After The Awakening, societal upheaval began to fracture the station, culminating with the shattering of the Eye. Now three years later, resources are becoming scarce and those who remain are starting to get desperate. Not only have gangs been growing rapidly, but strange creatures and monsters have begun appearing all over the station. Residents form small communities to try to weather the increasingly post-apocalyptic landscape they find themselves in. In an abandoned neighborhood in the Arms, a small community of survivors huddle awake in a commandeered community center in the dead of the night. Tipped off that a local gang’s arrival is imminent, the center’s newest (level 0) members are tasked to defend their new home. Our crew of survivors must level-up and find a way to survive and thrive in their new post gap reality.

Call of Cthulhu (2014)

Beginner-friendly
English
Horror
Released in 2014 by Chaosium, Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition is the latest version of the cult-classic cosmic eldritch horror role-playing system originally launched in 1981. The story is based off of the  literary works of H.P. Lovecraft and lovecraftian works. Instead of setting the players up as heroes, the characters are regular investigators who are exploring cults, forbidden knowledge and various eldritch-cosmic entitites and threats. Description Occupations in the game for the characters include academics, reporters, and private investigators. The gameplay loop revolves around uncovering information, analyzing clues, and evading dangers. As the supernatural elements in the game are considered more powerful than the investigators, they have are not expected to actually confront most of the threats head on. Instead they usually have to resort to avoiding or escaping any situation that may arise. Combat is lethal and usually leads to characters getting permanently killed or pushed to insanity (which eventually is the same).  System Overview & Key Features Percentile Framework (d100) Every action is resolved by rolling two ten-sided (d10) dice to get a result from 1 to 100. If you roll is equal to or under your skill rating, the action is deemed a success. This approach simplifies the mechanical process of the game, as there are no complex tables to keep track of and compare to decypher whether it is a success or failure. Pushed Rolls If a character fails a skill check, they may attempt to "push" the roll, allowing for a second attempt. This requires the player to come up with a new, more desperate approach to performing the task. If this subsequent pushed roll also fails, the Keeper describes a severe and immediate negative consequence. Sanity and Madness A core mechanic of the system is the tracking of mental stability. Investigators lose points from their Sanity gauge when exposed to anomalous creatures or disturbing truths. Drops in Sanity result in the character experiencing temporary or permanent forms of madness, which can manifest as new phobias, delusions, or a temporary loss of player agency over the character. Bonus and Penalty Dice To account for situational advantages or disadvantages, the game employs a system of bonus and penalty dice. If a character possesses a distinct advantage when performing a task, an extra d10 is rolled and taking the higher result. A disadvantage means rolling an extra d10 and taking the lower result. Combat Lethality Physical altercations are inherently dangerous by design. Investigators possess limited hit points, and the damage output of both conventional firearms and anomalous entities is high. Recovery mechanics are slow, simulating realistic healing times. This structural lethality serves to discourage combat and incentivize stealth and investigation. Expendable Luck Players can spend points from their character's Luck pool to retroactively lower a dice roll. The points are subtracted on a one-to-one basis until the dice result qualifies as a success. This ensures that the Luck pool is a limited resource which should be used and utilized in the most critical situations.
