Dungeons & Dragons 5.5e (2024)

Overview

Dungeons & Dragons 5.5E (commonly called the "2024 rules" or "D&D 2024") is the revised and updated version of the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition tabletop roleplaying game, published by Wizards of the Coast. Released across three core rulebooks throughout 2024 and early 2025, it is not a new edition. It is the same game, refined. The revision was driven by a decade of player feedback and data on how tables actually run 5E, and it shipped to coincide with the game's 50th anniversary. The three revised core books are the Player's Handbook (September 2024), the Dungeon Master's Guide (November 2024), and the Monster Manual (February 2025). All three are reorganized, reworded for clarity, and mechanically updated. Rather than replacing 5th Edition with a "6th Edition," 5.5E expands and tightens the existing framework while maintaining backwards compatibility with every 5E adventure module, sourcebook, and campaign setting published since 2014. If you are new to D&D entirely, start with the
Dungeons & Dragons 5e (2014) https://groupfinder.gg/library/dungeons-dragons-5e-2014
entry for a full explanation of how the game works. Everything described there still applies here. This entry covers what 5.5E specifically changed.

Description

D&D 5.5E plays identically to 5th Edition at the table. Players create adventurers, one player takes on the role of the Dungeon Master (DM), and the group tells a collaborative story driven by a twenty-sided die (d20) and the DM's rulings. The core loop, the "Three Pillars" of Combat, Exploration, and Social Interaction, and the fundamental mechanics (Advantage and Disadvantage, Bounded Accuracy, the Proficiency Bonus, the rest system) all carry over unchanged. What the 2024 revision addresses is the rough edges that a decade of play exposed. Martial classes (Fighters, Barbarians, Monks, Rogues) now have more tactical options in combat instead of repeating the same basic attack every turn. Spellcasting classes have been rebalanced to reduce the gap between low-level and high-level power. Rules that were famously unclear or frequently house-ruled (grappling, crafting, surprise, two-weapon fighting) have been rewritten. The Dungeon Master's Guide, long criticized as poorly organized, has been restructured into a book that new DMs can actually learn from rather than only reference. The result is a game that feels the same at the table but runs more smoothly. Groups that have been playing 5E for years will notice the quality-of-life improvements. Groups starting fresh will simply have a cleaner ruleset from day one. Both 2014 and 2024 material can be used at the same table without conversion, though the newer rules are recommended for new characters.

Key features

Weapon Masteries

The single biggest change to how martial classes feel in play. Weapons now carry specific "Mastery" properties (Cleave, Graze, Push, Topple, Vex, and others) that martial characters unlock as they level up. A Fighter wielding a greataxe with the Cleave mastery can hit a second target adjacent to the first. A Rogue with a rapier using Vex gains advantage on their next attack. This gives martial characters a tactical vocabulary that previously only spellcasters had, turning each turn into a real decision rather than "I attack again."

Revised Class Design and Subclass Standardization

Every class has been rebalanced. All classes now select their Subclass at level three, standardizing the progression and eliminating the old inconsistency where some classes specialized at level one and others at level three. Several underperforming subclasses have been redesigned, and martial classes in particular have received new features at levels that were previously dead. The Monk, widely considered the weakest class in 2014, has been significantly strengthened.

Species (formerly Races)

The game now uses the term "Species" instead of "Race." The mechanical change is significant: species no longer grant fixed ability score increases. Instead, players choose where to place their bonuses during character creation, regardless of species. This decouples character optimization from species selection, meaning a halfling can be an effective barbarian without a mechanical penalty. Each species retains unique traits (darkvision, breath weapons, lucky, and so on) but the stat bonuses are player-chosen.

Updated Feat System

Feats are now organized into tiers (Origin, General, Fighting Style, and Epic Boon) that unlock at specific levels. Every character receives an Origin feat at level one as part of their Background, which means feats are no longer an optional rule that some tables ignore. This gives every character a small customization hook from the very first session.

The Bastion System

Introduced in the revised Dungeon Master's Guide, Bastions are customizable player-owned strongholds that unlock at level five. Players choose facilities (an arcane study, a smithy, a greenhouse, a gambling den) that provide mechanical benefits between adventures, such as crafting magic items, gathering intelligence, or generating income. Each facility has its own special orders that trigger during downtime. This gives campaigns a persistent home base and answers the long-standing question of "what does my character do between adventures?"

Apex Monsters and the Revised Monster Manual

The 2025 Monster Manual expanded the creature roster to over 500 entries and redesigned many legacy stat blocks to be more dynamic in combat. Classic monsters have been given more varied actions so that fighting a troll in 5.5E feels different from fighting a troll in 2014. The book also introduced "Apex" versions of iconic creatures (an Apex Hag, an Apex Owlbear) that serve as higher Challenge Rating variants for use as bosses or late-campaign threats without requiring entirely new monsters.

Backwards Compatibility

The core promise of the revision. All 5E adventure modules, sourcebooks, and third-party content published since 2014 remain usable with the 2024 rules. If a table wants to bring a 2014 character into a 5.5E game, the rules accommodate it. In practice, most groups adopt the 2024 rules for new characters and continue running their existing campaigns and adventures without conversion.

The City of Intrica

West Marches / Living World
One world and a big pool of players, but no fixed party - whoever signs up that week is who plays.
Homebrew
House rules, a custom setting, or a system the Game Master wrote themselves.
The city of Intrica lies between Poland and Germany; it was founded over 500 years ago and stands tall today. However, it has not stopped suffering its trials and tribulations. Its current one is a black hole blotting out the sun over the city. The black hole, however, is not just a black hole; it is a pocket dimension known as "The Great Selection", a Battle Royale created by an adversary of the city known as "The Silent". Within this grand Battle Royale, the winner would exit with all the powers of the other participants, meaning that if any of the very malicious beings inside of it were to win, it would spell ruin for not just Intrica, but maybe even the entirety of Europe. It is up to the agents of the Arcane Enforcement & Global Intelligence Service, aka A.E.G.I.S., to break into this battle royale and turn the odds in favor of the participants who are friendly to this world. After all, you can move a mountain if you do it bit by bit.

Looking for: One Player that is available every Thursday and that is the right fit for our game and the team Player spaces: One DM spaces: Zero D&D version: 5.5e 2024 rules with some modifications Location: Online - Zoom Video - Beyond Maps - Google Drive Shared Folder Time: Every Thursday at 5pm Pacific - 8pm Eastern … usually a 4 hour game Game dates: Every Thursday minus a vacation or two Platform: Zoom and Beyond Game description: Forgotten Realms / Faerun / Pre-Spellplague with 5.5 2024 rules It is an established game, with a great group, and is highly immersive. It is a well balanced game that leans toward role playing, battle, and exploration. It is a choices-matter game…we believe this adds to the stakes and increases full immersion. The table is open-minded, respectful, wild at times, and committed to creating one of the best games possible. We value respect, communication, and a shared spotlight. We are looking for consistency first and investment second. We can easily figure all the other stuff out together. Beginners or Vets are welcome to apply. 18+ only, the game is Rated R plus when the story calls for it. Be aware players will drink, curse, argue sometimes, and vape at the virtual table. The role playing is very description based. Character voices are not required, but encouraged.

Moonsetter: A Project Moon D&D 5.5e Mini-Campaign

Homebrew
House rules, a custom setting, or a system the Game Master wrote themselves.
Combat focused
Fights, tactics and initiative take up most of the table time.
M Corp. Residing in District 13 of the City, and the pinnacle of mental and psychological care. Nowhere else will you find psychologists and therapists more qualified. Whether you're suffering from run-of-the-mill struggles, serious mental health conditions, or something more esoteric, you will find no better treatment than within one of M Corp's mental care institutions. …If you're well off, that is. The Backstreet slums of District 13, as is typical for all districts, doesn't get to taste the fruits of its parent corp's labour. Mental health services in the Backstreets are underfunded, neglected, and ineffective for dealing with the City's ails—with one exception. Moonsetter Clinic, founded by an ex-researcher of M Corp, seeks to bring the cutting edge of mental care to the people who most need it. Since its establishment three months ago, it has become a venerated, almost sacred institution to the Backstreets residents. Dozens of people each day walk into the complex, and walk out changed for the better. Even some of the Five Fingers have taken notice, and gone as far as to enforce it as neutral ground exempt from their bloody turf wars. It is a bona fide miracle. You don't buy it. Oh, you had your suspicions before: nothing that good ever graces the Backstreets without some strings attached. But there's also a personal reason behind your mistrust. You know someone—friend or family, colleague or simple acquaintance—who is a frequent patient of this place, and they recently went for their usual check-up. Maybe you even accompanied them to the lobby. It's been days, and they haven't returned. Your suspicion turned to surety. You quickly came across others who shared your experience, banded together, and decided. There is something rotten about Moonsetter Clinic, and you are all going to get to the bottom of it. Introduction Hi there! I am Nope (22, he/they). I hail from the far-off land of New Zealand, and I've been playing and running TTRPGs for close to 9 years now—mainly D&D 5e and 5.5e, but I've also dabbled in other systems like Pf2e and Lancer as well. I am also, as the title might indicate, a big Project Moon fan! This mini-campaign was made to combine two of the interests nearest to my heart, and is hopefully the start of a larger anthology of adventures set in the City. If you're not aware, Project Moon is a Korean indie game studio that creates games set in The City: a cyberpunk dystopia with fantasy elements. Life is cheap, violence is banal and commonplace, and corporation rule unchecked. In terms of vibes, think office workers in suits or streetwear fighting with store-bought swords and back-alley augmentation procedures, living paycheck to paycheck. Familiarity with this setting is not required for this mini-campaign; the plot will be pretty self-contained and won't make many references to the wider Project Moon canon. Details - System: D&D 5.5e, with some homebrew to adapt it to Project Moon's setting. The necessary homebrew is actually quite light (just 9ish pages) thanks to the City arguably borrowing more from high fantasy than conventional sci-fi in its worldbuilding; thus, the majority of translation is in reflavouring abilities and classes rather than bespoke custom rules. You can take a peek at the homebrew I plan to use here. - Level: Probably around 5-7, to be discussed with players during Session 0. Level-up is unlikely, given that this is a single adventure. - Time: Sunday 2pm fortnightly, GMT+12. Sessions will run from 3-4 hours. - Starting Date: My goal is to hold Session 0 sometime in early-mid October! - Length: 4-6 sessions, as a very rough estimate. More likely to be longer than shorter. - Players Needed: 4-5 - Platform: Foundry for VTT, Discord for communication Requirements - Age 18+ - Have a decent mic and a stable internet connection. - Have some decent experience with D&D 5e or 5.5e, or be willing to learn quickly. - Be willing to be earnestly invested in the campaign, and in each other's characters. - Be prompt and timely in showing up to sessions; give advance notice of a few days if you're not able to make it. - Don't be a bigot or an asshole. - No use of generative AI; I'm not a fan. Further Considerations - This is an LGBTQ+ friendly table! If you're not comfortable with that, go elsewhere. - The following topics will be covered: classism, mental health, medical malpractice, slight body horror. - The campaign will likely have a focus on combat and social interaction, with limited exploration. - This campaign is intended to be serious, but not misery porn! There will be ample space for jokes, light-hearted moments, and goofiness in general. - Combat difficulty will aim for 'challenging but fair'. I'm not interested in playing every encounter absolutely optimally; enemies will act based on their personalities, goals, and the current situation. As a DM, my priority is for combat to be fun and engaging, while still maintaining actual stakes—notably, this means non-zero chances of character death. - The setting of the campaign is not perfectly 1-to-1 with the Project Moon setting, due to D&D's mechanics and structure. The biggest divergence from canon is that magic as it works in D&D exists in the City and is well-understood and utilized as just one of many pathways to gain power, alongside technology, augmentations, and sheer competence. - Project Moon's stories are very character-focused, with emphasis on personal trauma, character growth, and facing your fears to achieve self-actualization. Include the word sun somewhere in your application. While the scope of this mini-campaign means there probably won't be much in the way of formative character arcs and development, I want to keep that focus on character-driven personal stories that Project Moon is known for. - My hope is to run this mini-campaign and others like it (some set in the City, some with their own bespoke settings) to build a community of like-minded players, with whom I hope to establish a long-term TTRPG gaming group! - I am technically a Project Moon larper LMAO (haven't played any of the games, got into it purely through watching playthroughs and wiki-diving) Applying If you want to apply, fill out this form! Once I gather enough respondents, I will shortlist a number of potential players and schedule interviews with them over voice call on Discord. After that, I will select 4-5 players to invite to a Session 0, and hopefully from there the campaign will begin!

Displaced Cans

The story is set in a world with 4 distinct nations, each with their importance in and out of the main story, ranging from a massive nation built on a large city, to a divided nation of high mountain dwellers to grassland and desert inhabiting nomads. This campaign has been running for 1 and a half years and i'm looking for a player to join. This is a mostly homebrew world with a homebrew story, with a few house rules just to make the game more enjoyable (notably i decided to axe casters only being able to cast 1 spell on their turn, e.g. Fireball then Misty step being allowed). This dnd uses DnD beyond for the making of sheets and gameplay but uses roll 20 for the visual side and battlemaps. We are also using discord for talking amongst eachother, so only real requirement is that you have a mic, that is all. The party is level 11 and as such you'd be starting at their level, it consists of a Monk, Artificer and a Cleric. There was another player but they've taken a temporary hiatus and the other player has essentially gone awol, hence why im looking for another player. I've been a DM/player for around 2 years now, with my players also playing dnd for around 2 years, we are all around the same age (16-17) . If you wish to join, simply reply with your discord user and a lil bout yourself, favourite class and whatever else you wish to say.

Hunter
Hello all, My name is Hunter (22m) looking to play DnD as a player! I am a DnD veteran and mostly forever DM, but I really want to get into a game as a player and stick to a character long term.  That being said, I am only really free Mondays and Tuesdays after 5 p.m. CST for the foreseeable future. I am still in academia so my schedule can get weird but I'll always have free time during the week. I would prefer playing a fairly serious campaign, and especially one that is full of good role players like myself! I enjoy meaningful combat in my games, and I also enjoy preparation/information gathering on the bbeg or specific scenario! I especially like when a group is invested in the stakes of a campaign and chooses to take most things serious, albeit I am all for some hijinks ;). Things I bring to the table: - Invested in the story/campaign! - Always a unique voice and character! - Extreme note-taker! - A willingness to create a story alongside new friends :) If that sounds good or if you have questions, feel free to DM me! I would love to hear about your campaign setting!

Foundry Virtual Tabletop (Foundry VTT)

Virtual tabletop (VTT)
English
Paid
Foundry VTT is a self-hosted, modern virtual tabletop application that revolutionized the digital RPG space upon its release in 2020. Developed by Andrew Clayton, it recently celebrated its five-year anniversary with the launch of Version 13. Unlike its subscription-based competitors, Foundry provides a powerful, high-performance environment that runs in a web browser while giving the Game Master total control over their data and hosting. It is widely considered the "Gold Standard" for power users and tactical GMs. Description Foundry VTT is built on modern web technologies (Node.js and WebGL), allowing for hardware-accelerated visuals that outclass almost any other browser-based platform. It is a "buy-once, own-forever" product where the GM hosts the server locally or via a cloud service, and players connect for free through their browser. Its true strength lies in its modularity; with thousands of community-made modules, a GM can transform the software from a simple dice roller into a fully automated, cinematic video-game-like experience. System Overview & Key Features One-Time Purchase Model There are no monthly fees or feature gating. Once you buy a license, you own the software and all future core updates. You can host an unlimited number of players, and they never have to pay a cent to join your games. Dynamic Lighting and Vision Foundry's lighting engine is best-in-class. It supports per-token vision, "fog of war" that persists between sessions, and complex light sources (like flickering torches or pulsing magical orbs) that interact realistically with walls and doors in real-time. Extensive Module Library The community has created over 2,000 free modules that add everything from "3D Dice" and "Animated Weather" to "Automated Combat" that handles math, resistance, and condition tracking automatically when a player rolls an attack. V13 "ApplicationV2" UI The 2025/2026 updates introduced a reimagined user interface. It is faster, more accessible, and allows for much better window management, reducing the "screen clutter" that previously plagued the software during complex sessions. Self-Hosting and Data Privacy Because you host the server, your maps, character sheets, and campaign notes are stored on your own hardware (or your chosen cloud provider). You aren't reliant on a third-party company's servers staying online to access your game. Massive System Support While it is famous for its "premium" level support for Pathfinder 2e and D&D 5e, Foundry supports over 200 different RPG systems, many of which feature official, high-quality modules from publishers like Free League and Paizo. Fabula Ultima is a tabletop roleplaying game designed by Italian creator Emanuele Galletto and published by Need Games!, released first in Italian and then in an English edition in October 2022. It bills itself as a TTJRPG - a love letter to Japanese console RPGs like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and Dragon Quest.  Built by a designer who tried reskinning other systems to capture that feeling and, failing to find one that fit, wrote his own. The game found its audience fast, taking home the Gold ENNIE for Best Game and the Silver ENNIE for Product of the Year in 2023.
