Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen

Looking for 1-3 people who are interested in a weekly game taking place on the weekend. Exact time will be figured out by the core players. I’d want interested people to be able to show up about 75-80% of the time, since in practice, we’d miss some percentage much larger than that. The campaign is Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen. The players are presently level 5. The rules involve a lot of homebrew. The main goals of that homebrew are to increase the pace of combat, increase tradeoffs for ability scores, and make downtime more meaningful. While some of the rules are new, most of them are just ports from older editions of D&D.  The basic campaign has the characters take on the role of an elite squad in the military that is resisting the conquest of the Red Dragon Army, which has been sweeping the continent. In Dragonlance, arcane magic is regulated by the Tower of High Sorcery, while divine magic is rare, as the gods had previously abandoned the world and are only now just returning. The campaign has a tie-in board game to enact larger scale battles in the war. We had been toying with a lower commitment campaign, but ran into the limitations of that. In practice, that means that none of the original core players will continue on as core players. We will still be experimenting a bit with sidekicks, which can potentially be controlled by guest players when they’re able to show up. Changing the core players means I’m only somewhat tied to continuing Dragonlance in particular. If you like the idea of playing a homebrew 5e campaign weekly on weekends, but are struggling to get excited about dragonlance, then I’d be happy to hear from you. I’d also be happy to hear from anyone in a similar-ish situation (trying to run a weekly weekend game but struggling to find enough players) to see if we can join forces. Some other notes: We would probably plan to start in June, though we could obviously plan characters and such beforehand. While I don’t mind teaching people how to play, and in fact expect to do so, I would prefer people who understand the time commitment of a campaign. Relatedly, I’d prefer people who are willing to iterate a few times on character creation until we get something that feels good/fitting for all involved, rather than people who want to play an extremely specific character regardless. While character death isn’t guaranteed or required, it is possible, and if the rules say your character dies, your character will almost always die, except in some special cases. Recall that while this isn’t a true meat grinder, there are no temples with working clerics, either. The goal is to make new friends to play with, not play the game for the sake of it, so let's make sure we like each other before we get too deep.

Hi all, I'm a veteran TTRPG player and GM, currently have the forever-DM curse when it comes to gaming and I really want to play as a player again. I just play 5e 2014 these days and am looking for other 5e 2014 beyond my own DMed games. I'm a min-maxer rules-as-written lover and warlock-main. I love mechanics heavy games where the mechanics support story-telling. I live on the penninsula but am willing to travel by BART, Caltrain or even Amtrak for a serious D&D game. Willing to go as far as Sacremento. Reliable player and eager to support the DM's narrative and love adapting my character build to fit party dynamics and goals. A wizard has nothing on a warlock in terms of real utility. Cheers! PS: I do not play on-line and I do not play 5.5e. I do not use DnDBeyond.

Hey, I'm Justin. Big fan of RP heavy tables and players that want to be there. Still love me some combat though! Playing off and on since 2018, last adventure was 2+ years & I was DM-ing for the last 18 months as well. Only looking for an in-person game (willing to host!) in the East Bay ideally. Open to weeknights after 6pm & anytime Saturdays for weekly games. I can also do Sundays between 10a-4:30p but only once or twice a month. I'm no DnD expert but I am fairly well versed on almost all of the basic class specific 5e skills and abilities. I'm versatile as a player, happy to "fill in the gaps" if that's what a table needs class-wise. I've mostly played melee characters, but I love my halfling warlock to pieces (Ciaran McOnderfut, fyi). Also willing to play 5.5, just not as familiar with it (read a little, played none).  I am 100% the kinda guy with a whole Google folder full of pre-gen characters with back stories, and I'll gladly leave them on the shelf if the setting doesn't fit. I might go roll up a new one now just cuz I'm thinking about it, lol. Read a ton of fantasy & sci-fi back when, sword of truth, dragonlance, bio of a space tyrant. LOVED the Broken Earth trilogy. Late to the party, but watching CR C4 now.

I've been doing TTRPGs since I was a kid, around 2016 or so. I obviously started out relatively unconnected to roleplay, but over time, I've cemented my ideals, and slowly reached further and further for that ultimate campaign. Objectively, the greatest strength a player-led campaign has over any CRPG is freedom. A CRPG is inherently stuck to whatever was coded. There's a path, encounters are balanced for the expected player points, loot is guaranteed and pre-arranged, etc. But a player-led campaign can completely overwrite that, and offer ultimate immersion. The ideal campaign, in that case, takes advantage of that ultimate strength, and goes all-in on it. The DM doesn't have a pre-arranged story, plot hooks, or really anything planned out. They're just managing the world (ideally their own homebrew for ultimate affinity), whilst the players carve out the story. Encounters aren't pre-balanced to suit the party, what's there is what makes sense to be there-which means the players actually have the most control over the difficulty of an encounter, as things will always leave clues to their nature, things the party can dig out, locate, and prepare from-or know to avoid. The result is that the party forms their own story, without constraint, while the DM focuses on having the world continue its cycle, with elements of the world reacting to the party as it makes sense while the rest of the world continues moving forward. In that regard, however, obviously the party needs some form of a unifying goal. And I think no goal out there beats the simplicity and scale of forming an empire. Not only does it enable each and every player to pursue their own character interests from a uniquely motivated and capable position (as garnering resources for their own goals can help a foundling empire in many ways, while also pushing them much further), but it also gives a grand, long-term unifying goal to the party. The only catch is that it requires, as any good thing does, both a good DM and good players. Thankfully though, I've formed a group of players eager to find such a campaign!

Tabletop gaming in San Francisco

San Francisco and the wider Bay Area have a creative, experimental tabletop scene with a strong tradition of indie and story-focused games. Alongside the classic store campaigns, you’ll find groups meeting in cafés, community spaces and tech offices after hours.

D&D and Pathfinder are easy to find, but the Bay Area is also a great place to try something different - indie RPGs, story games and GM-less systems (games played without a dedicated game master) are popular here. Plenty of tables welcome newcomers, so no prior rules knowledge is needed.

The area hosts Big Bad Con, a convention known for its indie and inclusive focus, and KublaCon, a long-running gaming convention held over Memorial Day weekend.
