Description

SO... Every year around Halloween, I like to run a horror oneshot. I've been learning about new horror RPG systems and I want to run one of these! I have several HORROR options I want to pitch to you. 1 CHILDISH THINGS —immersive horror Keywords: PCs are children: ages 4-9, monsters, small secluded town, high immersion, nightmare-like, run away the terrors of the night to find your missing parents and classmates in your small secluded town. What is seen the shadows is easily misunderstood in the mind of a child… Roleplay: HIGH Combat: LOW Technology: MODERN DAY (but before cell phones) Player buy-in: For this game, you will need to be able to act, react, and talk like little kids. You will need to have some form of family in your backstory that you care about - and want to find when they go missing. Because this is horror, you won’t be able to FIGHT the monsters; rather you’ll need to RUN. This game won’t work unless you can react to things as a small CHILD, i.e. with FEAR. We only play after dark, preferably with your lights out, with headphones, and clutching your childhood blanket or stuffed animal. It should be an extremely immersive horror experience. **note: Before the first session, I ask you to list out your ACTUAL fears to me (clowns, spiders, being kidnapped, etc) so that I do not include them in the game. In addition, I ask all my players to read and sign a waiver, telling you (among other things) that if it’s getting too intense, you must TELL me right away so that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. 2 MOBIUS —paranormal exploration Keywords: modern-day teenagers, trapped on an abandoned island, paranormal, time loops, strange and terrifying secrets hidden, investigation, time travel Roleplay: LOW (You don't need to be an actor/roleplayer to enjoy this game) Combat: MEDIUM Technology: MODERN DAY (but before cell phones) Player buy-in: You don’t need to be a good roleplayer to enjoy this mysterious game. There won’t be much combat, as anything truly dangerous you’ll probably have to run from. You WILL need to be curious, investigative. You’ll also need to be driven to escape and survive, because there won’t be an opportunity for you to create another character if you die; you’ll just have to take over one of the 3-4 NPC teenagers who came with you. In other words, be careful! **Helpful hint: The last time I ran this game, everyone signing up initially wanted to be “the quiet nerd type”…I would encourage you to go for something else if you think you can. :) 3 TEN CANDLES —tragic horror Keywords: modern-day teenagers, trapped on an abandoned island, paranormal, time loops, strange and terrifying secrets hidden, investigation, time travel Roleplay: MEDIUM Combat/Lethality: MEDIUM Technology: ANY (Our setting can potentially any era from real-world history) Player buy-in: 10 days ago, the sun went out. No one understands why or what happened. But then... that's when They started to appear. You can't kill Them. You can't understand Them. The only thing they fear... is light. But the electric grid (or village bonfire or whatever light source you have) has been mostly wiped out... and so has the rest of humanity. This is specifically a "tragic horror" narrative - there is no way to "win." This is a story of the last few people left alive, and their final struggles before ALL of them die at the very end. This is a powerful narrative-driven system where we really try to tell a compelling narrative together. This system is intended to be played in-person in a dark room with actual candles that are purposely extinguished as the game progresses... so I'm honestly not sure if this sort of style can be run online. Still... if there is sufficient interest, I'm down to see what can happen! WHAT SYSTEM WOULD WE USE? To be honest, I’m not entirely sure. I would prefer to assemble my players first. Then we can decide the system together. I’ve had great success in my decade of GMing running a heavily simplified system called The Bare Bones System, but I am open to running any of the following:
  • Dread
  • Ten Candles
  • Kids on Bikes
  • Everyone is John
  • The Bare Bones System
Several of these systems imply that we might have a scenario not covered in my 3 ideas above. That is ok with me! :) YOU READ THIS FAR? Great! Can't wait to meet you! Leave an application below! :) THE APPLICATION (please copy/paste these questions into your reply) **NOTE: I only come to Reddit once or twice a week, so DM me on Discord if you are interested! My Discord tag is moogamoogamooga Name: (screenname is fine) Approximate age: (specific or vague) How many years you've played TTRPGs, which systems, and how many (if any) years you've been a Gamemaster: Which past (or present) campaigns you've enjoyed the most, and why: What sounds appealing about a horror game to you? (BONUS: Have you ever been in a horror campaign before, as a player or a GM?): Tell me which campaign idea(s) sounds fun to you! What intrigues you about it? What do you imagine yourself doing?: Pitch your character(s). This can be as short or as long as you’d like: **NOTE: I only check Reddit once a week, so DM me on Discord if you are interested! Homebrew
House rules, a custom setting, or a system the Game Master wrote themselves.
Whether you are a recruit, an adventurer seeking glory, a criminal serving your sentence, or a local hero, you have found yourself at Scalewatch a fortress-city standing against the horrors that crawl from Gnarltongue Hollow. With too few soldiers to defend the border, you and a mismatched band of survivors have been given a forgotten outpost of your own. Build it. Defend it. Make it a home. Hunt the Primals that escape the Hollow, protect the people of Eldorune, and venture into the jungle to document what lies beyond the border. But the Hollow does not give up its secrets easily. Most who enter never return. Scalewatch is the last great bastion between civilization and Gnarltongue Hollow, a vast and hostile jungle where strange creatures known as Primals emerge from the depths. With soldiers stretched thin and the border growing more dangerous by the day, you have been given an abandoned outpost and a simple order: hold the line. Build your bastion into something worth defending, protect the people of Eldorune, and hunt whatever makes it past the walls. But survival requires more than a strong sword arm. Study the Primals you encounter. Examine their bodies, behaviors, and strange adaptations. Document what you learn so others might survive the creatures you face tomorrow. Venture beyond the border into the Hollow itself, where every expedition brings new discoveries and new dangers. The deeper you go, the more questions you will find, and some answers may be better left buried. Set in the high-fantasy world of Ithyra, The Hollow Hungers takes a more grounded and gritty approach to fantasy, focusing on survival, monster hunting, exploration, and the harsh realities of the frontier. Resources matter. Wounds matter. Your bastion matters. Every expedition carries risks, and every decision can determine who makes it home. This campaign is for players who enjoy narrative-driven adventures, meaningful choices, monster hunting, exploration, and building something together. My style is heavily narrative and choice-focused. There is rarely one correct answer, and the world will respond to what you do. You will decide what threats to pursue, what discoveries to record, how your bastion develops, who you trust, and how far you are willing to venture into the Hollow. Build your home. Hold the border. Hunt the monsters. Uncover what lies within. Most who enter never return.

No politics of any kind: right, left, sexuality, real world religions, excessive feminism/whatever etc not allowed, if you have a need to make a fuss about that, you will be kicked out. It's perfectly fine to have those views, but don't bring them to the game (this is meant to be fun, social, intellectually challenging). If you have major psych problems that get in the way of simple social interaction (explosive outbursts etc) don't contact me. I do ask for telephone number just in case of you not showing up to game and you didn't tell me otherwise. Emergency stuff, like if you get sick or something. I do care about my players! FEEL FREE TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT PLOT AND GROUP COMPOSITION! 1 Give me warning 24 hours before the game if you are gonna cancel. I need the time to tell the others and cancel the game if I don't have enough people to play. This is non negotiable! 2 Play well with others. If you are too disruptive, I will boot you after several warnings. 3 Take a different role each new campaign. Try new things! 4 You have to show up to play 75% of the time. If you cancel too many times, there's no point to having you in the group. 5 Sometimes you will be required to take a role you don't really want because the rest of the group made their picks already, this is meant to help the group have versatility. If this happens, the next campaign I will make sure you get first pick as to your role/class. 6 If you have to make sacrifices for the group, like blowing feats on item crafting etc, I will try to send good things your way. Teamwork is important. I have been GMing since 1997 or so, cut my gaming teeth on AD&D first ed. I go above and beyond for my players. I am very adept at teaching, btw. This campaign is on Mondays at 6pm Central time Discord video chat, but we could change time/day if the other players are willing and able. Set in Chicago, I've added abilities to the NPCs to support their discipline powers, and set the whole timeline from Chicago 1 to 2 and beyond more gradually, changed who lives. Note that I have changed some of the clans a bit, like switched Gangrel(Sabbat) and City Gangrel (Camarilla), turned certain Brujah into True Brujah, a Ventrue into a Nosferatu, that sort of thing. Vampire has characters that are difficult to create without my assistance if you don't know how the numbers and discipline powers work (you distribute dots, there are no classes). However the game play dice mechanics/rules are easy as heck. The hard part is that it demands more forethought to play, because there's a lot of deceptive NPCs, including your own. It is oddly more ethical/moral than medieval fantasy games by far, even though you don't play a hero normally, and even though you're a vampire feeding on humans and aren't human yourself. It's darker I suppose, lots of intrigue and figuring out what is really going on. Kinda like watching Babylon 5 or Dune, you have to take notes to recall everything that could be vital later. A LOT less combat than medieval fantasy games! It's rare, but nasty when it does occur. Maturity is advised. Note that I broke my campaign down in a timeline, it can be altered by PC actions, even down to the year and month.  VERY DETAILED homebrew campaign that can be changed given PC choices. RIght now they are in 1991, you will get the PC's average xp to start with, along with a host of extra little benefits outside what the creation rules normally grant. You dictate the parameters, I figure out how to make the mechanics do what you want and tell you about potential problems, and I pick out flaws so as to give you your own story arc. Its also a great way to get rid of problem NPCs. The Dark Fate flaw is reserved for anyone meeting their end during Gehenna, the end of the world. See, the Antediluvians rise, and they are hungry for their clan members.... That doesn't mean you can't play, you can still run other characters even after your main one croaks. Official list of clans/bloodlines you can take in Chicago compatible with the group as it is: Nosferatu (must take Dark Fate flaw), Toreador, Ventrue, Brujah, Gangrel (Sabbat), Malkavian, City Gangrel (Camarilla), Tzimisce (must take the Dark Fate flaw), Gargoyle, Caitiff (Anarch typically), Assamite (Milwaukee Sabbat), True Brujah (Camarilla). Obscure list (you can take them if you want, but you won't have support from fellow clan members in Chicago): Daughter of Cacophony, Nagarajah, Lamia. Got a Cappadocian (a hospital morgue doctor and a necromancer), Salubri (one Healer(an FBI agent), one Watcher (a homicide Chicago police detective), one Salubri Warrior that also has Celerity as clan, and Lasombra (an amateur boxer and criminal lawyer, he wants to go Camarilla). I have set up each pc to have fast growth, to have really good rolls for their disciplines right away. The party could use a member that has Vicissitude, Animalism as clan, or possibly Thaumaturgy. Luckily there's a 5 point merit that allows anyone to buy clan xp rates, hint hint.  If you go into this expecting to create your character without regard to the setting or the group composition, you can kiss your entitled butt goodbye. Even if I did nothing different as GM, the group would suffer and your PC might not make it. I do get your back when I get the chance if you are willing to try a clan you don't normally. You gotta also pay for mentor ratings since you need a teacher to increase your disciplines outside of Celerity, Fortitude, Potence. BTW, I made these 3 powers much easier to use, and less vitae expensive. If you pick from the obscure list, you can BUY up to 7th generation, but you blow 6 background dots to pull it off.  Caitiff are interesting, I made them able to teach ANY discipline they learn; normally the 13 clans can only teach their clan disciplines. A Tremere is possible, but you'd need to be a diehard Anarch (meaning the local Tremere want your keister dead, although good news for you that the Chicago ones are less than competent). If you don't know the clans, I can give you information but you will need the V20 core rulebook (learning the setting and abilities but not the disciplines), the dark ages core rulebook (mostly just for the super powers/disciplines), tome of secrets (all forms of vampire magic, even Obtenebration), and Erciyes Fragments (this will feature heavily in the campaign, its the Vampire bible of sorts including prophecies) books. Also a total of 20 d10's, basically two matched sets of 10 d10's, but the 2 sets cannot match each other. Preferably translucent dice, not solid. Chuck out any that have bubbles inside. Game always starts at 6pm central Mondays. The Guide to the Camarilla from the Revised edition might be handy, but not strictly necessary. Prince's Primer is nice for understanding elder vampires' mindset. They are very manipulative, and deceptive. I am using V20 for most of the fluff, with slight alterations to politics, the abilities for the most part. DAV20 is for the disciplines, the special powers. I can get you pdfs of the two core books free. We are also using Ercyicyes Fragments and Book of Nod in the campaign, the party just got a copy of both by accident. Yes, I will be taking the campaign into the end of the world, Gehenna. Lore of the Clans and Lore of the Bloodlines might be useful. This is a copy of an update I gave to a player that missed a session: Both Michael Payne Toreador and Son of the Malkavians are dead, and Jay found another body in the basement, this time of a dead boy, a formerly months old vampire Caitiff. His name was Neon, and Damien of the Brujah (one of 2 anarch leaders was caring/teaching for Neon) Damien will have to be told. Neon was chained via manacles to the basement floor in Son's Skokie residence, his throat ripped out and his face gnawed upon. Evidence was found that Son was blackmailing Horatio Ballard into insane and demeaning acts. You could get a major boon from Ballard using this, or use it against him in other ways. (the players gave this information to the Nosferatu, who now owe them big time)  Ballard apparently has been naughty. Michael accidentally killed Son, and Michael is dead thanks to the party knocking him into torpor, and the elders ending him. recall, Michael was suicidal, and homicidal after the party ended his ex wife. plus had a rep for being a thug who used to cause chaos your character Salubri Healer just rescued the young couple that Son was psychologically torturing, and you shot Michael (bashing damage, just reduced him to torpor) as he tried to use Ben the Cappadocian as a shield

A BIT ABOUT ME: Hello, my name is Aron, I’m 34 and I started playing this game as the forever DM just before COVID hit and have been DMing multiple weekly games since. I am for the most part fairly introverted which this hobby has helped deal with, and while I may not do all the little funny voices (it’s a thing I’m working on) I’m a sucker for the Rule of Cool and a good story! And what better story then one you build together as a collaboration with other like minded individuals?! Outside of D&D my interests revolve heavily around music, movies, and other general nerd things
