Eclipse Phase is a detailed science-fiction exploration of uncertain futures. It investigates the nature of transhumanity as it transforms itself, physically and mentally, into something posthuman. The AIs left behind a network of wormhole gates that we now use to explore and occupy distant exoplanets. Choose from genetically-modified transhumans, synthetic robotic shells, uplifted animals, or digital infomorphs, optimizing your capabilities for specific missions. Your character’s mind and memories are backed up and can be restored if you die—a built-in system of “save points” and functional immortality. Characters are skill-based, with no classes, so players can customize their team roles and specialize in fields of their choosing. A package-buy system enables quick character creation and customization while also defining elements of your character’s background. Starfinder Second Edition is Paizo's sci-fi/science-fantasy tabletop RPG, a full rebuild of the original 2017 Starfinder Roleplaying Game announced at Gen Con 2023 and released across 2025 following a year-long public playtest. Rather than running on its own separate rules the way 1st edition did, Starfinder 2E is built to be fully cross-compatible with Pathfinder Second Edition and its 2023 Remaster, sharing the same three-action economy and switching from Wizards of the Coast's Open Game License to Paizo's own Open RPG Creative (ORC) License. The line launched with Starfinder Player Core in July 2025 and Starfinder GM Core that September, with an Alien Core rounding out the initial trio of core rulebooks. Description Playing Starfinder 2E means playing across the Pact Worlds and beyond, a galaxy-spanning science-fantasy setting where mystic spellcasters and laser-rifle-toting soldiers operate side by side, using rules deliberately built to share a common language with Pathfinder 2E. Since it launched on the same PF2E chassis, a GM comfortable with one system can pick up the other with relatively little relearning, and material can be ported between the two settings with GM permission. Reviewers have noted the 2E launch trimmed the class list to six at release - with the Mechanic and Technomancer, mainstays of 1st edition, still finishing their own playtest for a later release - while significantly expanding species and other player options compared to the original core book.

Lancer is a science fiction mech tabletop RPG created by Miguel Lopez and Tom Parkinson-Morgan (better known online as Tom Bloom, creator of the webcomic Kill Six Billion Demons), first published by their own studio Massif Press in 2019 after a Kickstarter that raised over $430,000. A second-edition hardcover followed in 2024 in partnership with Dark Horse Comics. Lancer calls itself "mud-and-lasers": hard science fiction and military detail blended with high science-fantasy weaponry, set in a deliberately optimistic future - Union - that its creators built as a direct reaction against the cynicism common to a lot of modern sci-fi.

Scarlet Heroes is an old-school tabletop role-playing game designed by Kevin Crawford and published by Sine Nomine Publishing in 2014. Built on the chassis of early fantasy role-playing games, it is explicitly engineered to support "duet" play (one Game Master and one player) or completely un-GMed solo play. The system functions both as a standalone game and as a mechanical conversion overlay, allowing a single player character to survive and conquer classic modules written for a full party of four to six adventurers without any structural modifications to the adventure itself. Description The default setting for Scarlet Heroes is the Red Tide, a dark, sword-and-sorcery fantasy world where the remnants of humanity have fled to an isolated archipelago known as the Sunset Isles to escape a world-devouring crimson mist. In this setting, players choose from traditional fantasy heritages and step into classic archetypes: the Fighter, Cleric, Thief, or Magic-User. However, the true focus of the ruleset is its revolutionary math-rebalancing engine. Traditional early-edition fantasy games are notoriously lethal for solo characters due to the "action economy" favoring groups of monsters. Scarlet Heroes alters how standard numbers are interpreted, transforming a single baseline character into a legendary epic hero who can cleave through hordes of lesser foes while preserving the danger of boss monsters. In the world of tabletop gaming, there is one system that towers above all others. Whether you are a veteran of the hobby or just getting into it, you are aware of the elephant in the room. As the hobby evolves with new rulesets and indie titles, we dived deep into the numbers we are seeing on Groupfinder. You can see the live numbers here. The dominance of D&D It will come as no surprise to most of us, that Dungeons & Dragons remains as the dominant force in the hobby space. And while some of us (generally veterans who have played for a long period of time) feel like D&D has outlived itself and is losing to the newer titles. The numbers tell another story: Groups: ~60% of all the groups currently looking for players are for Dungeons and Dragons, either 5.5E, 5E or some previous edition. Players: If groups are over half, then the player side is even steeper. As 90% of all player posts on Groupfinder are looking for a D&D game. While many players are also open to playing other game systems, the vast majority still treats D&D as their go-to system. Looking to start your TTRPG hobby journey? It seems like you should find a dungeons and dragons group first. Beyond just D&D An encouraging trend we can see from our data, is the players' willingness to experiment and also try something else. While 90% of the players are looking to play D&D, they aren't only looking for a D&D group. When we exclude Dungeons & Dragons from the statistics, we can draw a clear "Top 5" of adjacent systems.
